Look into the Rewards and Returns with Reference to the Sony MDR-XB500

By Reid Leclair

Headphones are a norm in our culture - regardless of where you are, persons can be seen using them while commuting, working, exercising or studying. Improvements in technology have enhanced storage capacity and battery life causing users to listen with headphones to loud volumes for extended periods of time. Audiologists are worried by the listening habits of headphone users as younger persons are showing signs of hearing loss generally common in adults that are older. Prevention is important in hearing protection.

The headphones have a comfortable headband that is adjustable and very thick, extra large ear cushions. The cushions are nearly 2" thick and offer enduring comfort and outstanding acoustic performance.

Additionally, the pads are extremely comfortable, although throughout extended listening they will get warm. The headphones are manufactured from plastic, though this is nothing special, they feel sufficiently sturdy. Sony is printed on both sides of the headband at the point where is can be adjusted. Beneath this, the side indicator and model number are provided on the cups.

Listening to the Sony MDR-XB500 is precisely as you would expect it to be. The bass is outstanding and played very deep to the point where it would be a little unsettling. It feels as if in some way Sony was able to fit a 15" subwoofer into the headphones; maybe that is the reason that they require such huge cushions. The frequency response is down rated to 4Hz and though they played deep, I am confident they do not go that dee. Yet I have no method of actually calculating the results. The remainder of the performance of the headphone was truly hard to assess as the bass just overpowers everything. Some acoustic music was played through the Sony MDR-XB500 and it sounded very good, however even in that instance I wanted a button for the volume to slightly reduce the volume on the low frequencies. The mid-range performance was slightly flatter than anticipated and the treble even sounded slightly rolled off, however this was likely because of the large contrast with the bass.

The Sony MDR-XB500 depends on driver units that are 40mm to make sound and the final result is sound that is not very bass-heavy with more overall clarity and definition. The soundstage of the Sony MDR-XB500 is rather familiar with decent separation and air to it. The Sony MDR-XB500 has a good mixture of finesse and aggressiveness to them which is shocking. The majority of persons sound as if they agree with me. The Sony MDR-XB500 has a good energy and punch to them causing listening to music to be very fun. The Sony MDR-XB500s sound shockingly clean with excellent bass control. The upper highs and mids are definitely the frailest section of the sound from the Sony MDR-XB500; however they give an enjoyable, energetic audio that nearly compensates it. The Sony MDR-XB500 has an excellent build quality for the cost and great comfort thanks to the large pads. The majority of reasonable bass focused headphones are inclined to have bloated and slow bass. The Sony MDR-XB500 manages to have properly controlled bass with excellent texture and extension on it. Bass heads who are searching for a budget choice would definitely be pleased with these.
