Selecting Your Favorite Sci-Fi MMO

By Nathan R. Robel

The sci-fi MMO games, or massively multiplayer online games, are made in the style of many different genres in order to attract lots of gamers to these Internet based, multiplayer adventures. Games are now marketed to people around the world by means of the Internet so competition amongst game designers is getting rather stiff. Science fiction based games have been made since the early days of video games but that does not mean that all the good design ideas have already been taken. The aim of video game makers is to make a good science fiction that falls into a game genre that will attract large numbers of players and maintain good popularity.

A lot of the most well-knownsci-fi MMO games are designed as character centric RPG's, or role playing games. The point of an RPG is to advance your character's abilities as the game moves on so that with time they have the best items, skills, and weapons. The massively multiplayer features of an MMORPG come to the fore when the missions you receive in the game are extremely difficult and cannot be completed unless you have the support of a team of other players.

The sound effects, visual techniques, and challenging enemies that are programmed into sci-fi MMO shooters makes them especially popular amongst hardcore gamers. First person shooters, which allow you to see the game's world as if you were really the character, can be quite intense and force you to battle enemies face to face. Shooter games emphasize the importance of having a good arsenal with varied weapons that can come in handy when facing specific enemies that have a vulnerability that you can capitalize on if you have the right weapon.

As game designers continue to push the envelope on new games they are starting to mix genres together and develop new games that are not as easy to categorize as some of the more classic games were. For instance, lots of first person shooter games also contain elements common to puzzle games such as elaborate puzzles, confusing, maze-like worlds, and time restricted missions. Many games register your character's progress by using experience points and a leveling method; both are borrowed from RPG's.

There are all sorts of different sci-fi MMO games now available to gamers who would like to enjoy the excitement of battling enemies in a futuristic fantasy world. You are sure to find the perfect game for your preferences, regardless of whether you like RPG's, puzzle games, shooters, or some other genre.
