Adaptations Of The Battlestar Galactica Plot

By Willard Y. Wuckert

People around the world have embraced the characters, worlds, and stories of the Battlestar Galactica franchise. The complete world of this sci-fi storyline began in 1978, but since then it has expanded dramatically to include several different television series, novels, comic books, and even video games. The story that was first presented in that series has been re-imagined, adapted, and expanded in many ways over the years in order to appease fans who are always hungry for more. Some of the characters have been through more changes than others as the franchise has been altered during the years, but the core concepts of the original story have been preserved and cherished throughout BGS history.

The first set of characters was introduced during the 1978 show developed by Glen Larson; he was also behind the development of the 1980 sequel series. The basic idea of BGS is that the wicked robotic Cylon race is constantly trying to destroy the few remaining humans left in the galaxy. Despite the fact that the original series was only one season in length, that brief season was enough to draw in devoted fans who were so upset at the cancellation that they protested at the TV studio's headquarters.

In 2003 the decision was made to remake the series by means of a three hour miniseries which later was developed into a regular series on air from 2004 to 2009. This was a re-imagining of the original series so it featured the same basic characters with some notable updates to make them feel more realistic for modern viewers. The reality that this later series was so much longer than the original indicated that the producers could spend more time creating deep, intricate characters.

After the Battlestar Galactica series was finished in 2009, work began on spin off projects that would continue to expand on the characters and themes made popular in the TV show. Caprica was aired in 2010 as a one season spin off that was as a prequel, informing viewers on some of the events that led up to the first episode of the 2004 series.

There are many hardcore Battlestar Galactica fans who love to get their hands on all creative material that adds life to this unique sci-fi universe. The war between the humans and the Cylon will continue to rage, whether it be in new online games or in upcoming television programs.
