How A Great Space Game Is Made

By Pattie S. Schaefer

There is a lot of competition in the world of space game designers and programmers since they are all trying to make the very best games possible and to attract the most players. There are thousands of people all around the world who are at least casual games; there are also die hard gamers that are obsessed with video games. For example, younger children usually prefer simple games that have a rather straightforward approach to overcoming challenges while adults tend to like more advanced games that require a lot of thinking and strategy. New games are carefully scrutinized before being given out to the public since each studio that makes a new game wants to be fairly sure that the target audience will like it.

A space game design team frequently starts with a basic gaming genre or concept, such as a shooter game, and then expand this with their own creative ideas in order to break from typical genre norms. Part of their job is to create new plots and stories that will serve as the motivation for the events and characters of the game that they are working on. This can be hard, since they have to fit the character's design with the type of gamer they are trying to entertain; children will prefer simple, fun characters while adults like to relate to their game's characters and see them as both realistic and complex.

Making a great background setting for a space game can be especially difficult for some designs. Science fiction themes are typically used and classics of the genre are adapted to fit new games; it is hard for designers to balance the desire to create a familiar setting that will remind gamers of other sci-fi adventures with the desire to make a totally unique game. Concept art must be prepared and then programmed; it is not always easy to turn the visual ideas that the design team has into real visual gaming features on a computer or TV screen.

Considerable amounts of game testing are done once the final product is just about ready to be shipped to gamers. Several hours are invested doing real game testing in which bugs in the programming are identified and removed in order to make the final product as smooth and fun to play as possible.

Space game design demands a lot of effort and is not simply a matter of gathering several science fiction ideas and throwing them together. Appreciating the effort that goes into making these games can help you enjoy the experience of playing them that much more.
