Discover Free Tetris Games Online

By Shawn E. Bryant

Since the first development of gaming platforms, video games have become an integral staple of the electronics industry. Though hundreds of software developers have released thousands of games, there is one title which is a giant in the industry. Some would argue that Tetris has experienced the most continuous success of any video game ever. And, now that it's online as well, you can find free Tetris games online.

The game was originally created and released in June of 1984. The designer was a man named Alexey Pajitnov who was a Russian scientist. A year later, the game ended up on the IBM PC and proliferated throughout the Soviet Union. The initial porting to the PC from the company where Alexey worked, was to cause a great deal of controversy in years to come.

The controversy sprung from the fact that none of the parties that started producing the title actually had rights to it. From the time it first became available in 1984, all the way up until 1989, controversies followed it. The legal battles were for control and distribution of the software.

But, in truth, the one underlying reason for the battles was because the game was so good. No matter the platform, or the company that sold it, wherever it was introduced, it was an instant success. In 1988, a Dutch video games publisher and designer by the name of Henk Rogers came across the game while in Las Vegas at a trade show.

His was to be an incredibly significant impact on the future of the software. The next eight years saw it absolutely skyrocket in popularity and proliferation. It ended up being introduced as a part of Nintendo's Game Boy platform, and was added as an in-flight feature on several airlines. And, it also took the mobile phone gaming industry of Japan by storm, completely leveling any competition.

And, it spread to Korea, Europe and North America via the burgeoning hand held devices market. The minute it became available for the iPhone and iPod touch, it became the number one most downloaded game for Apple. One of the things about the unparalleled success of this game is the fact that it's so simple. It is essentially a puzzle game.

It's played through the manipulation of different tetriminos [various four-sided shapes] dropping into a playing field. The field is a rectangle narrow side up. The intention is to use the shapes to construct a line straight across the playing field without any gaps. Every time this kind of line is created, it disappears. Shapes that were above it drop, and the player must form new lines. Levels are reached through 'clearing' lines, and with each level, the shapes fall faster.

Although it is ridiculously simple, it has proven time and again to be equally incredibly addictive. With the advent of online gaming, the title has become even more successful. It's received several awards, it's available on a multitude of gaming platforms on all manner of electronic devices and now there are even places on the web where several free Tetris games that can be played online.
