Super Mario Carves Out a Unique Place in Video Game History

By Scott Baker

On the surface, the concept of an Italian plumber journeying to the Mushroom Kingdom to save a princess from a savage turtle-like beast does not form into a coherent picture. And yet here we are, over 20 years later, and the Super Mario series is still one of the best-selling video game franchises around.

In the 1980s, the Japanese video game company Nintendo released Super Mario Bros., a side-scrolling platformer featuring Mario as the lead character.Players control Mario as he ventures into the Mushroom Kingdom to save Princess Peach from the hands of Bowser. The Mushroom Kingdom is full of strange, and wonderful sights, from mushroom-like sentries the Koopa Troopas, and powerup mushrooms that increase Mario's size.Other characters in the series include Luigi, Mario's brother, and Yoshi, a dinosaur-like creature.Whilst all of these characters make an appearance on Super Mario t-shirts, it is the Italian plumber in red that takes center stage.

The Super Mario series has developed over 200 different games, and the combined sales of all the games has reached more than 200 million. The strength of the franchise has allowed it to create spin-offs for its Super Mario platformer, with forays into the sports, fighting, and racing game genres. As an example, Super Smash Bros. features Mario and other iconic Nintendo characters in what is regarded as one of the best fighting games ever created.Amongst the many Super Mario tshirts on sale are designs from these spin off games.

Aside from the video games, Super Mario has also been featured in an animated television series, an adventure movie, and comic books from Valiant Comics. The catchy Super Mario theme is also recognizable worldwide, being a fixture throughout the various Super Mario titles.Mario merchandise is also hugely successful with Super Mario t-shirts amongst the biggest hitters.

Superior gameplay remains a trademark of all Super Mario games. The gamers' skills are tested as they rely on their speed, and quickness to maneuver the simple controls. As new generations of more powerful consoles are created, so has the Super Mario franchise improved its graphics.
