By Tim Green

The concept of MMORPG, which is the acronym for Massively Multi-player Online Role Playing Games, has totally revolutionized the video games as they were once known to their fans around the world. The modern age is the age of information technology, communications and connectivity, and modern game players are content with nothing short of a rich online gaming experience to satisfy their appetite for the real competition.

As a matter of fact, the MMORPG take the competition in video games to the next level, and that is true for the very concept of video games themselves. It will not be incorrect to say that the MMORPG are the video games of the 21st century, offering rich gameplay and dynamic graphics with multi-player competition through online connectivity. They have all the ingredients required by a modern video games enthusiast.

World of Warcraft was the pioneering game that took online multiplayer gaming to such a massive scale of popularity, while the rest of MMORPG simply followed its footsteps. Although World of Warcraft was not the first of its kind, but the fact that distinguishes it as the pioneering success of MMORPG is the fact that it was a massive financial success and helped change the gaming habits of millions of gamers around the world by introducing this new style of vide gaming to them.

This fact can be better illustrated by the fact that no less than 11.5 billion registered users were recorded for the World of Warcraft by the end of the year 2008. This only goes to show how MMORPG have gathered a worldwide following, which can be shown by the startling revenue milestone of 1 billion dollars, which was reached just by the end of the year 2006. Such revenue levels can only be compared to top gaming consoles such as Nintendo Wii, PlayStation and Xbox.

MMORPG in their earliest evolutionary form were first developed in the 1970s when multiplayer games like MUD were in use. Although a modern gaming enthusiast would not have anything to do with them. But it was NeverWinter Nights from AOL, which was the first MMORPG that had any graphic value for the user, and after that, a series of MMORPG were developed with improvements. Ultima Online is among the pioneers in MMORPG as well, and its creator Richard Garriott was the one who came up with the term MMORPG as we know it today.

Most of the development of the MMORPG has taken place in the United States, but every video games fan knows how countries in the Far East have been active in the history of the industry, and they still are. After the development of MMORPG in the West, the Far Eastern Technological giants also followed suit, particularly Korea, from where we have seen popular MMORPG like Rohan: Blood Feud, and the latest offering AION.

But what quality makes the MMORPG so special? They are played just like any other video game, but the fact that the MMORPG allow an interaction of a huge number of players is something that no other video game could offer you. In fact, this is what attracts many of the people to MMORPG. But they are rich in all other aspects of the game, in which many of the quality MMORPG can leave other video games behind, such as the graphics, the user interface, customization, gameplay and the plot. MMORPG are mostly built more or less on a similar pattern.

MMORPG are available both for free and for a subscription free, while some of the games are console-based, such as Final Fantasy XI for PlayStation 2. If you love video games and like to follow the latest video games offered around the world, then chances are that you would have already tried your hand at some of the best MMORPG. Recent improvements in MMORPG, such as customized game content and group raids are really offering a gaming experience that gaming enthusiasts have never experienced before.
