How Hasbro And FarmVille Put A New Twist On Old Favorites

By Joyce Loto

The newly formed partnership between, Hasbro, and the creative forces behind the popular Facebook game, FarmVille, has breathed new life into four children's games. The pairing, which was announced last February, has also resulted in the creation of two home versions of Zyngas hugely popular Words with Friends. Both versions of Words with Friends, and the updated versions of Hasbro card games, Memory, Old Maid and Go Fish, along with Hungry Hungry Hippos, all of which now feature FarmVille characters, hit stores in October.

A virtual farming game in the spirit of Harvest Moon, a video game series that was created in Japan, FarmVille was once the most popular game on Facebook. It was originally released in 2009. Its popularity spawned the release of a sequel last September.

Players participate in the game by performing the various tasks of managing their virtual farms. Just as in similar farm simulation games such as Happy Farm, a once popular game in mainland China. The tasks range from plowing, planting, and harvesting their crops; to raising livestock. Individual players do not pay to play the game, although they do have the option to purchase content

In the revamped version of Hungry Hungry Hippos, FarmVille animal heads like a cow, a sheep, a horse, and a pig have replaced those of the old hippo heads, and colored marbles meant to represent their individual food preferences, have replaced the old white marbles. The original name has been changed to Hungry Hungry Herd, and it is retailing for between twenty and twenty-five dollars. Parents who purchase the newly rechristened game, receive fifty dollars in farm cash.

The newly branded FarmVille Animal Game featuring Memory, comes with a Disco Dancing Sheep where the cards, that now feature favorites from the on-line game, are kept. The game is still played in the same way, except that players can now also win by matching baby animals with the corresponding animal parent. The cost is reasonable at about ten dollars, and parent receive a gift of twenty dollars farm cash to be spent on-line.

Also available at just below ten dollars is the new version of Hasbro's card game, Old Maid. The cards that now feature caricatures of faces familiar to the online farming community are accompanied by their own Rockstar Cow card-pouch. Parents receive twenty in farm cash when they purchase this updated version

The pouch for the newly designated FarmVille Animal Go Fish game is in the shape of a chicken. Just like the updated versions of Old Maid and the Memory game, its cards have also undergone a total transformation. It also comes with an on-line farm cash incentive, and is priced at less than ten dollars.

This collaboration between the virtual and traditional gaming worlds has also produced games for the eight to thirteen and thirteen and above market. The release of the play it at home version of Draw Something and the CityVille inspired, CityVille Monopoly and CityVille Skies, brings the partnerships new game total to eight in all. All include either FarmVille farm cash or complimentary codes for other Zynga created worlds.
