Understanding Character Controls In Space Battles

By Monte R. Reinger

Space games are packed with interesting challenges such as gaining new abilities for your character, interacting with alien races, and participating in epic space battles. Even thoughthe first science fiction games were thought as of more of a niche market in gaming, the truth is that these well-crafted games are now appealing to many different types of gamers. By improving everyparticular feature of their games, designers have been able to create elaborate science fiction adventures that feature captivating stories, characters, and visual worlds. One of the most importantparts of any game, from the gamer's perspective, should be the controls and learning to master them.

Space battles often appear in science fiction games that are produced for Internet play so your two main sources of controls will be your PC's keyboard and mouse. Game designers usuallypreset several basic commands to the most convenient keyboard buttons. In mostcases you will find that movement and direction is controlled by the WASD keys or the standard arrow keys. If the WASD keys are used designers usually add other helpful commands on nearby keys such as Q, F, and spacebar.

The mouse is often needed to lead your ship and weapons during space battles since it is good for targeting in 3D games. You might need to use your mouse in conjunction with directional keys to keep your character moving and looking in the proper direction or to aim your ship's weapons. The mouse buttons are usually set for basic attacks and similar commands although many games will also allow you to alter the preset commands set to these buttons.

Some games allow forother input devices, such as joysticks or gamepads, which offer additional control options. Joysticks can be veryuseful during flight and battle in a science fiction game since they offer good movement control.

There are many distinctkinds of input devices and keyboard shortcuts that you could choose to use in your game, but it all boils down to the fact that understanding the commands of your game is essential to managing your character's skills. In doing so you will have the chance to overcome even the most challenging space battles in your favorite sci-fi game, assist other players in cooperative play, and develop a strong character that can advance to the game's final stages.
