Choosing Safe Freware

By Derrick Trott

It is entirely free to download Freeware. The word Freeware is a word to describe free software. There is no limit at all to the amount of times you can download it and there is no need for a licence.

Freeware includes a wide range of software, from work related programs to music and games. It is a fantastic Internet resource. Many people worry about the risk of viruses and this makes them unsure about downloading Freeware. Some Freeware does contain viruses and other threats.

So it is important to take the appropriate steps to protect your computer. Sticking to the larger, popular Freeware sites is a good idea. Reputable sites tend to test and check programs before they share them with anyone.

A number of sites are more focussed on quantity than quality. Size will not always indicate safety however because there are many sites who will list anything to be able to claim the biggest selection.

Because there are such a huge selection of different Freeware programs on offer it can be a challenge to identify the right ones. If you want to be an informed consumer a reliable method to see which sites are trustworthy and learn a little about their history is in forums. With a little research you should soon be able to learn which software people have had both good and bad experiences with, enabling you to learn by their mistakes and save yourself some time. There are many large directories which encourage users to comment on software. This is hugely informative.

Some of the Freeware programs that are available are free because they are completely diabolical and nobody would ever dream of actually paying to use them. Whilst others are quite handy to use for free, but are not quite useful enough to persuade individuals to actually go out and spend money on them.

Then you have brilliant programs built by competent individuals. Why would anyone spend all that time on a project then release it free of charge? Most programmers hope to get credit for creating a great piece of software. Many programmers will also take voluntary donations however this is not expected. There is never an actual charge for using Freeware.

A number of people confuse Freeware with Shareware. But they are completely different. With Shareware you can use various software for a short trial free of charge, but you have to pay the for the full version if you want to carry on using it.
