The Gongs For The Game Of The Year

By Timmy Motson

If you were asking people about awards ceremonies and which ones they had heard about, the majority of people would probably tell you about the Oscars which are the awards to recognise the work of those in the acting industry over a twelve month period. It is not just the acting industry where awards are given out; the gaming industry has its own version of the Oscars called the Game of the Year Awards and this is something that most game developers and software houses want to be recognised for.

The only real noticeable difference between the Game of the Year Awards and the Oscars is the lack of tearful speeches and the red carpet.

The way that awards work in the gaming industry is by public vote from those who read the video gaming or computer press; you do not normally see these awards held at a top venue. Another way that games are voted on is through the games manager GameSpy or Steam which are desktop favourites for the PC. The good thing about this is that the people who have paid for and are playing the games are the ones who are doing the voting.

The big winners in 2010 were Red Dead Redemption and Mass Effect 2 which will come as a surprise to all those that were addicted to the Call of Duty Series for much of the time that voting took place. According to users of GameSpot Forum, one of the main names in for contention this year is Mass Effect 3.

This forum tends to be one of the ones that will measure how hot a game is. However there are more categories to think about than just RPGs which is what Mass Effect 3 is.

The debate continues in terms of football games as to which game is better FIFA or Pro Evolution. Both of the new versions of these games are set to be released in September and we will see then.
