Games And Emulators For The 3DS On Your R4 DS or R4 3DS Card

By Simona Silva

It`s not often, but there are times when free home brew games for the ds or 3ds come out that blow me away. Remarkable as that may be, considering free games are, well, free. Read on for a couple of different home brew free games and apps for the Nintendo DS, Nintendo DSi and the Nintendo 3DS. The first one will be the emulator that will let you play old classic games - thousands of them - and the other will be a newly released home brew game. Emulators are one of my favorite home brew types of apps, because they open up a whole world of games for older consoles. In many cases, there are a good thousand or more amazing games for old computer and video game consoles that you now end up being able to explore, enjoy and play away on your new console.

I know a lot of people in the USA probably don`t know what the MSX is. The MSX was a much bigger hit in Europe, and a tremendous success in Japan. The great thing about the MSX was that you could buy any MSX computer, from Sony or Philips - any of the big name makers, and the game just worked across all of them. Thanks to the R4 for 3DS cards, you don't have to worry about finding one of these one eBay or anything of the sort. You just need to use an emulator, and luckily it`s free and it is called msxDS v0.91 for you to be able to play any of those amazing msx games on your 3ds. Now, I realize because the MSX was not a hige hit in the USA, you may not know which games you should play, but that is just fine.

There are some standards which I think everyone should try. Some of the greats include games like Conta, Metal Gear Solud 2, Puzzle Bobble, The Castle, Bomberman and many others. I bet you can see a little pattern starting in the game list. A lot of those games are games that are the biggest hits of today - and they all started out on the MSX. Pretty impressive for a computer for the 1980's that many haven't even hear of.

And now on to the next one one my list. This one is an actual game, and not an emulator at all. Got the R4 3DS or R4 DS card just about ready to go? Excellent! Then you want to make sure you get Retro Wars DS too! It's a cool retro shooter that was developed completely using open source and free tools. Absolutely all of this game was made using free tools for every aspect of the game - nothing commercial, so it is absolutely free. In my books this is absolutely mind boggling.

You know, blowing up alien space ships is loads of fun, and if this sounds like it is right up your alley, get this game and play away. The soundtrack is to die for, and the game plays like a dream - and like a game you'd expect to pay $20 or $30 dollars for. The big appeal of freeware games of course is that you can download and play them for free. No payment needed. In fact all you have to do is just download the game, and retrowarsds.nds file to your micro SD card and boot up your Nintendo DS or DSi and start your war on crazy aliens!
