A Closer Look Into The Early Years Of Super Mario Bros Games

By Ernest Rutherford

Since 1985, people have grown up playing Super Mario Bros, also called SMB. Millions have thrilled to the dangers involved in rescuing the princess from the evil Bowser. Here is a look at this game and the importance of the early years of development.

The first game is simple by today's standards, as you direct your player along a pathway. You will see question marks above your head and when you jump up and bump them you get a surprise. That surprise may be a coin or you may get magical powers. Collect 100 coins and get another life to play in the game.

You start out small and when you bump a question mark with a mushroom you have the chance to grow large. When you are large you have more life to enjoy. If something attacks you, you become small instead of dying. After you become large you can receive firepower from a special plant. This allows you to throw fireballs at enemies to destroy them.

Occasionally you can find a special mushroom that provides an extra life. The object of the game is to make it through each level without being killed. At the end of each level you face a boss who is hard to beat, but if you persist you will defeat him and continue on. There are eight levels to progress, and each one gets harder. The eventual prize is beating the game and allowing the princess to be free.

In 1993 Nintendo releases a sequel to their first game and it is called Super Mario Bros 2, sometimes abbreviated SMB 2. This game is quite different from the first one and is not played on the same gaming system. SMB 2 comes with an updated gaming system known as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System or SNES. You will not be trying to free the princess, but instead you must liberate Subcon (a dream world) from the sinister and evil Wart.

SMB 2 comes with four different characters to play the game with. You get the brothers and also toad and the princess. Each one of these characters has slightly different abilities. For example, toad is strong and can pick up and carry things easier. The princess can jump and stay in the air longer than the others. Luigi has the ability to jump very high.

Unlike the first game where you jump on enemies to destroy them, you need to pick up objects and toss them at your enemies with SMB 2. There are many things to discover as you venture through many different realities. Some areas have magic potions and special ways to warp ahead to other levels of the game. You collect coins that can be used to spin a slot machine at the end of each level, for more lives.

The first Super Mario Bros games are a well loved classic that lets you rescue the princess from Bowser. In SMB 2 you get to free a dream world from Wart. These two games are just the beginning of some amazing video game adventures.
