The Fundamentals of Star Wars: the Old Republic Gameplay

By Eliseo Gathings

One of the most talked about MMORPGs on the market, SWTOR (Star Wars: The Old Republic) came out with a bang last December. Millions of copies and new game subscribers flocked to this brand new game and have been hooked ever since. In case the name didn't give it away, the game is based off of the iconic Star Wars franchise. It's arguably one of the most successful and popular sci-fi franchises in history.

The game's storyline is set thousands of years before any of the events in the movies. At this point in time, the game's two key factions, the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire, are in the midst of a conflict that had been going on for centuries. The Treaty of Coruscant brought about temporary peace, but fighting shortly followed after its signing.

Whenever you create a new character, you must choose which side you will pledge your allegiance to: the Republic or the Sith Empire. Unlike other MMOs, SWTOR has four separate classes for each side. Each one of those classes has two advanced classes that you can pick. Some of the class choices include: Bounty Hunger, Smuggler, Sith Warrior and Jedi Knight. There's plenty to choose from and each player will easily find a class that suits their play style.

Aside from class choices, players must also select which race they want to be. Races include: Sith Pureblood, Zabrak, Human and Twi'lek. From there you can customize your character's look to make them as unique as you would like. Throughout the game, players will acquire various types of armor and other gear that further enhances their character's appearance.

Gamers will also gain some companions during their gaming experience. You will meet them during your travels through the galaxy. Your character will form different relationships with each companion. They can aid you in combat and also heal you while you are out completing missions. Companions can also be customized to the player's liking. They can take care of missions for you, gather materials and craft different items. Companions can even become love interests of your character and you can exchange gifts with each other.

Of course, a Star Wars MMO would not be complete without space combat. It's one of the more unique features of the game and is a ton of fun to play. Each class has its own ship that can be upgraded as you progress through the game. In order to complete more advanced and complicated space combat missions, players will need to perform these upgrades. Star Wars: The Old Republic also has Flashpoints, or dungeons, where players work together to beat bosses and gain amazing loot. Player versus player combat (PVP) is another great facet of the game and comes in the form of Warzones. More or less, these Warzones are games with objectives and opposing factions compete to win.
