The Hype About Macromedia Shockwave Games

By Jennifer Bowers

It is estimated that 400 million desktops at present have been installed with Macromedia Shockwave Players. This allows them to play free online games which have an astounding level of quality and detail. Shockwave is Macromedia's first multimedia player and predates the existence of Flash. The original concept of Shockwave was meant for movies but it was eventually found to be an excellent tool for the development of online games.

Shockwave's 3D engine is conceded to be the cream of the crop for online games. It has surpassed even Java in popularity. Proof of its excellent quality is the growing number of believers in the community of developers. The Shockwave player will recognize and accept all flash files. The Shockwave engine renders objects much faster than Flash, and it also works with the video hardware on the user's computer.

All free online games that are the product of the Shockwave engine have passed all standards with flying colors. It is believed by many experts that further advances in this technology may allow it to compete with console games in the future. Maybe not in the very near future, but it is not only possible but very probable. Another area where Shockwave excels is in its graphics capability which is considered by many as at least the equal of PSP or Nintendo DS. While these issues cause a lot of raised eyebrows, Shockwave is conceded to be a major player in the field.

Vastly diverse kinds of games can be developed in Shockwave. So far, games in Shockwave include racing games, simulators, combat, and RPGs. Many of these free online games require users to meet certain system requirements in order to play them. It is in this area that Shockwave has a lot of catching up to do with the console games. All games which are designed for a specific console will work. In comparison, you will need a powerful computer to play with Shockwave games. The great equalizer for Shockwave games is its cost advantage over console games.

You can play Shockwave games for free, or you can download for as low as $9.50 per download. Now, compare that with the $40.00 per PSP game or the $60 for an Xbox 360 game and the cost difference becomes a factor. As better games are released in Shockwave, we may see a shift in popularity from console games back to computer games in the future. Shockwave was and is a major player in the production and development of free online games.
