Features And Issues Of The Sony Playstation 3

By Rasphald Belownski

The PlayStation 3 is the 3rd gaming console created by Sony Computer Entertainment as part of the PlayStation series. It is included in the seventh generation of video game consoles alongside Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii. It was released back in 2006 and has since become extremely popular among gamers.

The PlayStation 3 is very powerful enterntainment unit. It is not anymore merely a video game console, it could also accommodate high definition movies and digital TV, store pictures and music, and even allow their users to go online. The impressive power of the PS3 comes from its CPU that is comprised of one 3.2 GHz Power Processing Element or PPE and eight Synergistic Processing Elements or SPEs. Because of its multiple core architecture, the system can designate each core to a specific task.

This allows highly effective multitasking capacity, and superior gaming experience. It also includes a dedicated graphics processing unit which can output resolutions up to 1080p HD. In contrast to other gaming systems, the PS3 can support Blu-ray discs, and is likely one reason why many people seem to choose this type of console. Adding to the appeal of the PS3 are the gaming titles that are only playable on the said unit such as Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy. Furthermore, the PlayStation community gets a great amount of third party support, meaning, you can come across more games and add-ons for the PS3 than the other gaming systems.

You must know though that the PS3 is not devoid of problems. One reason which causes consumers to be reluctant about buying a PS3 is its hefty price tag - the cheapest model is priced $249 in most retail outlets. When it was first released, it was also the biggest among the three gaming consoles from the 7th generation. Sony has launched a PS3 slim to take care of this issue though, but that also meant sacrificing some features, most notably, the capability to run third party OS. The much discussed PS3 Yellow Light of Death is also another reason why consumers are reluctant about getting this system.

Basically what happens is that some of those who own the original PS3 experience a fault indicator - a yellow flashing light, which shows up due to a non-specific hardware failure that makes the machine unplayable . The PS3 Yellow Light of Death is not as prevalent in the newer models though, and many owners of the older models have managed to resolve the matter by returning their machines to Sony. Some users, specifically those whose units are no longer under warranty, even did the repair themselves and have revived their PS3s.
