The Gameplay Culture Found In A Space MMO

By Aaliyah I. Herzog

As online role playing games become increasingly popular around the world, many of them, including space MMO titles, are developing their own unique culture. There are literally millions of players signed up for massively multiplayer online games around the world, making this a big part of the modern gaming industry. The developers that dedicate themselves to create and manage these games have to constantly stay on top of changes in the game since the game's servers are constantly running and players can log into the game 24 hours a day from distinct parts of the world. MMORPG's gather together many gamers and form a new community with its own culture based around the game they enjoy together, complete with its own terminology and customs.

Keeping the world of space MMO games constantly new and interesting is important to game designers who want to keep players coming back for more. In order to adjust game play and force players to reconsider their approach to their favorite MMORPG, designers often send out updates that buff or nerf specific in-game character classes. Buffing is in reference to a positive change, such as the granting of additional and beneficial abilities to a certain class of character. If a character's skills have been nerfed, however, you can expect unhappy gamers since some of the advantages they once had in the game have now been removed.

The grand majority of space MMO games feature progression systems, such as leveling up, that allow player to keep track of their progress in the game. One of the manners in which this is accomplished is through grinding, which means fighting one enemy after another in an effort to gain experience and move up to a higher level. Almost all online role playing games demand that players invest a bit of time into grinding their character if they hope to reach the highest levels, also known as endgame levels.

The core element of online games is their social features, such as in game chat systems that let players talk to one another as they play. The culture of a game can be viewed clearly when you observe chats that are full of abbreviated forms of words related to locations, enemies, and challenges in the game.

Some outsiders may be surprised to hear that space MMO cultures exist, but the reality is that the community of gamers is very strong. You are sure to comprehend the terminology of the gaming culture more as you become a part of that community.
