Effects Of Sci Fi Games On The Development Of Children

By Patrice McCoy

Science fiction can be said to be a genre of fiction which revolves around future discoveries and development in terms of technology and science. It combines situations from both the present and the past to come up with a whole new concept, which though partially exaggerated contains some aspects of the truth. Sci fi games rely on this concept hence creating a virtual world where players can compete using a character that they can control.

Sci-Fi games have numerous advantages that make many parents recommend it to their children. It is an easy way of ensuring g their children stay at home. In addition, the activities come with multiplayer online interface enabling the children to play against their friends at home. Considering the increased levels of crimes in parts of developed countries where the parents are at their workplaces most of the time, the competitions are a convenient way to keep the children safe at home.

There have been suggestions that these competitions open up a child's mind to the world of technology and boost their imaginative and creative capacity. These sporting events may have features that incorporate the use of a given virtual technological device which creates a certain curiosity in a child to actually learn how that device works in real life. A child who is more technologically- aware is better cut out to face the challenges of the increasingly technologically-oriented world.

On the flip side though, most of the activities mentioned do more harm than good. Most of them use war and fights as a tactic for the players to get ahead. The person who slays most opponents in their quest for victory is deemed the hero. This cultivates a violent culture in the sub-conscious mind of the player. Studies have shown that children who played violent activities were observed to be more aggressive than their peers who did not.

Furthermore sci-fi it has been observed that sci fi games affect the brain activity. They particularly impair the children's ability to focus, pay attention, concentrate, or restrain themselves. Children who play for long hours frequently, rarely respond to emotional issues and find it hard to concentrate on things that are non fictional.

Playing these games has been found to be chemically addictive, as was stated by Dr. Paul Grasby of Hammersmith Hospital, London. Dopamine, a hormone associated with pleasure, is produced twice as much in a player's brain when playing these games. This explains the addiction to gaming observed in most players of these games.

Some individuals are not in touch with the real life because they are too immersed in sci-fi games. This is manifested in their social skills. The kids have trouble making friends. Some create imaginary friends usually associated with figures from the gaming events and act as if the imaginary friends are real and in their social circle. Unfortunately they can carry the imaginary friends to adulthood making them social misfits.

It is the role of a parent to include outdoor activities and other events that involve human interaction in their child's play schedule. This is in a bid to improve their ability to form and maintain healthy relationships with other people. The hazards of sci fi games outweigh the benefits.
