Is The Old Republic the WoW Destroyer Everybody Wanted?

By Adam Morgan

Set in the expansive Star Wars universe, Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) is truly a sight to behold. Taking cues from Mass Effect for its color scheme and style there is so much beauty in this game. As soon as you log in you will feel like you have truly stepped through a portal and into the Star Wars universe.

As one of the hottest new PC release, SWTOR lies nominally in the MMORPG (massively-multiplayer online role-playing games) genre. Breaking new ground and thus moving away from other MMOs, Star Wars: The Old Republic incorporates a massive, choice-based story line right into the game.

In The Old Republic, each player will truly experience a different game and story, unlike WOW and most other MMOs, in which all players get essentially the same situations again and again.

Even better, this game is going Free to Play, meaning you will no longer have to pay the $15 monthly subscription fee. This will save you a bundle every month and you'll still be able to play with your friends and act out your Star Wars universe fantasies in game. The free gameplay will last you until Level 50, which is quite a substantial amount of play. On top of that, the price of the game is dropping to only $15, and you will get a free month of premium access with that.

The creators of SWTOR are always updating the game and adding tons of new content. For example, they are about to introduce Cartel Coins, which allows you to unlock game items and get new features.

SWTOR is still new and fresh, but it has matured since its release in December 2011. So you will now be able to enjoy the game with others like you, without the annoying bugs or annoying people. Newcomers are welcomed by the true, dedicated, and loyal fans who have stuck around. This is the best possible situation for new players.

The universe inside The Old Republic is immense, as proven by the dozens of planets for you to explore and the space combat mini games. The mini games aren't as fun as they should have been. There is still lots to like about the game, despite that minor downside.

You get to choose from 8 different character classes. You can choose to fight for the Republic or the Empire. If you ever wanted to be a Jedi or a Sith and dance around with a lightsaber, slashing creatures left and right then this is most definitely the game for you. Once you reach Level 10, you will be able to specialize into one of 16 advanced classes. The choice of advanced class you get depends on what your original character class selection was.

Different sets of powers and abilities await you on the planet you begin on. These are all determined by your selection of Empire or Republic. It is guaranteed that you will have a blast exploring this dangerous, massive world, no matter which side you've chosen. Prepare to never look at MMOs the same way again once you've feasted on Star Wars: The Old Republic.
