Activision Success Lead By Bobby Kotick

By Brandon Relief

In today's economy, there are few companies that have managed to keep their head above the water in their respective markets. Producers of videogames are no exception. While overall videogame sales have sagged, the company that has still found a way to thrive is Activision Blizzard.

Activision became Activision Blizzard in 2008 when the videogame publisher merged with Vivendi Games, owner the developer of World of Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment. This merger made Activision Blizzard the biggest videogame publisher in the world and would not have been possible without Activision's business savvy CEO, Bobby Kotick.

Kotick's business sense and aggressive deal-making over the past twenty years has propelled Activision from a state of insolvency in the early 90's to the industry leader it is today. With timeless titles like the Tony Hawk Pro Skater, Guitar Hero, and Call of Duty series, it is clear Bobby Kotick knows how to run a videogame publisher and make a great profit while doing so.

In fact, on March 24, 2011, Activision Blizzard had 5 of the top 10 top-selling new retail games in the U.S. by revenue, including the top two spots held by Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Call of Duty: Black Ops, respectively. With such retail successes, many scrutinize Kotick's approach to the industry by saying he only cares about the dollars.

As a CEO, Kotick has no choice but to worry about profit for his company, but it doesn't end there. He has devoted much of his spare time to charitable causes. He currently sits on the board of directors for the Tony Hawk Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to supporting the development of skateparks around the country where kids can exercise and grow without worry of arrest or persecution.

In 2009, Kotick spearheaded the establishment of the Call of Duty Endowment. This non-profit organization was created using profits from the release of Call of Duty games. The Endowment offers grants to organizations around the county aiding returning veterans as they enter the civilian workforce.

Activision Blizzard has seen great successes in the world of videogame production over the past few decades. While other companies continue to struggle in this economy, Activision continues to prove they are the industry leader for good reason.
