Flight Simulators and How They Have Developed Over the Years

By Carl Paine

Flight simulator games have been very popular ever since the very first home computers became available. Even games related to aircraft combat have increased greatly in popularity. The development in technology is the main reason for their popularity. The creation of animations and graphics related to plane games with an almost correct interface has captivated flight enthusiasts.

The constantly increasing power of home PC hardware, particularly graphic cards and improved sound capacities has led on to far improved realness and larger renown of these flight simulation games. Some of the earlier games were very basic when compared to the best PC flight simulator available today, but like a good book your imagination would take over and transform the flying experience and make it almost appear real.

The first aircraft simulator game I played was called Flight Path 737 and was written in Basic on a Commodore 8-bit computer back in the early 1980's. The blocky pixellated graphics were very poor by today's standards but that was adequate to stir my imagination and make me feel in my mind like I was actually flying. Presently the games are so realistic your inspiration has to do little as the experience is so realistic that just about nothing is left to the imagination

Many of today's flight simulators even supply the facility for you to create your very own virtual aircraft as well as fly loads of real world aircraft from single engine trainers like a Cessna up to the biggest airliners. Then naturally you can fly fighter aircraft if you fancy more action. The games offer you the same excitement as the genuine plane, flying with the same speed, with the same atmospheric conditions and with the same visibility of land and terrains. The aeroplane games are on the rise due to their excitement and complex detail with more and more new aircraft.

With the advent of online aeroplane games the requirement for various kinds of aircraft and different types of games are rising. There are plenty of flight simulators available, some are even open source meaning programmers are free to make their own alterations to the software. The most well-liked commercially available airplane simulator is Microsofts own Flight Simulator which has been around for many years and been through many various versions. The games are so realistic that even the aviation industry as well as the military are using these simulators to help train their pilots to deal with emergency scenarios.
