How Flash Internet Browser Based Games Have Evolved Over Time On The World Wide Web

By Christa Garrett

Fun games and funny games, being ubiquitous freeware, are currently the kind of video games that are most popularly played. The main appeal of these kinds of games is that they're very easy to play and are quick to get the hang of. These cool games are relatively new; but ever since Flash and Java have become integrated components of browsers, flash games are easily accessible by anyone with an Internet connection. Before 1996, most websites were generally media free since most webhosts couldn't support the amount of RAM and storage space required by most forms of media. Compared to the Internet today, the Internet back then was a very dull place.

This all changed in 1996 by the introduction of a program called Macromedia Flash. With the installation of this program, websites were able to host animated and interactive games. Aside from the innovations it introduced to online games, Macromedia Flash was also used to improve overall functionality of most web sites. Macromedia Flash was actually supposed to make animation easier. Flash was later on developed from the aforementioned program, and it led to the creation of simple Internet games playable on browsers.

Since then flash games had a steady following, but the real boom in their popularity occurred in 2001. With the sudden influx of Internet users, flash games and funny games served as the perfect form of quick, distracting entertainment. Web developers and designers as well as programmers then decided to restructure the most widely played games at the time, which were Asteroids and Tempest. This project was a success, which is why games which were originally played on other platforms were then remade with Flash.

These flash games weren't without problems, however. Some Flash-based programs, for instance, couldn't be launched properly on older model computers, or the animations and transitions for some action games would lag if too many people tried to play one particular game at the same time. In order to address these issues, Action Script 2.0 and Flash MX were developed in 2004. These programs provided for the organization of Flash applications as well as enhanced functionalities of media on websites. The games also became more popular in 2004 thanks to the introduction of online scoreboards for these games.

Although today's flash games and funny games are generally just as simple as their predecessors, they are still widely popular because they're just so fun to play. Bejewelled, which is one of the most popular cool games online, is being played by hundreds of thousands of different players at any given time. There are also a lot of sites nowadays which allow users to play and develop their own flash games. One of these websites is AddictingGames.com, where new games are constantly being developed. Flash games and funny games are exciting and fun distractions, and can even help you relax when you're stressed. The evolution of flash games over the years shows us that these games have come a long way, and they'll only get better with time.
