The game was made popular for the fact that you could put so many different plug-ins and add-ons to your server to allow you to make things different and unique. For example, you can turn your server into death match or a prison break game. The many admin tools make administering the game server a piece of cake. Rcon is great for the basics.
For every mod there is a custom map. Some maps are mod specific, however most will operate on all types of games. Developers still make custom maps for the original game types with demolition and hostage maps. This is no doubt because these original gametypes are the oldest and favourite.

The game has always been easy to run on dedicated servers and many people who wish run multiple servers choose this option out of ease and cost as it is cheaper to rent a dedicated server to run 6 or 7 server than rent them individually. The great thing about running your own dedicated server is you can run the server exactly as you want.
As well as being able to communicate in game by text, you can also use the voice-powered communication tool. In game voice is very easy to use, but the quality isn't great. You will find the professional gamer will normally use a dedicated voice server such as Ventrilo or Teamspeak 3. The benefit of using a dedicated voice server is this can be private to the rabble in game!
